Week 1: Check Yourself!

Three weeks into my new role as Assistant Principal, I received a straightforward yet significant reminder from a network leader in my district: “It’s time to change your email signature line.” At that time, my email signature still reflected my previous roles as a teacher and teacher leader, not my current position. Her nudge prompted me to reflect on why I hadn’t updated it sooner, leading to a deeper realization about the transition I was undergoing.

Why the Delay?

When I applied to the Summer Principals Academy at Columbia University’s Teachers College, my goal was not to pursue the perks associated with a leadership role but to make a meaningful impact beyond the confines of my classroom. The program equipped me with valuable theories and strategies, reinforcing my commitment to fostering educational excellence and equity. This commitment guided me as I stepped into my new role, and I was determined to stay connected to the foundational reasons that motivated me to pursue school leadership.

Understanding the Value Beyond the Title

In this reflection, I drew inspiration from Dr. Lorraine Monroe’s leadership principles outlined in her book, The Monroe Doctrine: An ABC Guide to What Great Bosses Do. Dr. Monroe emphasized that our value lies not in our titles but in our daily contributions and the results we achieve. She advised, “It’s okay to enjoy the perks that come with the title. But [we] must earn the title in the only way possible: by producing results!” (Monroe, 2003). Dr. Monroe’s advice resonated deeply as I navigated my new role. My hesitation to update my email signature wasn’t merely about the title change; it was about aligning my actions with the significant responsibilities that came with being a school-building leader. This role carried the weight of impacting every individual in the school building—from students and teachers to parents and community members. It offered a platform to drive systemic change that could positively influence the educational experience of the students I served.

Lesson #1:

Check Yourself. Reflect on the significance of your role and the value you bring to it. Beyond the title or position, your impact is determined by the results you achieve and the positive changes you drive. Let this understanding inspire you to go beyond the surface and commit to making a meaningful difference in your role.
