Hi, I am Karima Hughes
Who I Am
“Ain’t I a Woman”
I am an Afro-West Indian American woman who moved to the United States at 13 to reunite with my biological mother, who had come to the U.S. seeking better opportunities. Raised in Antigua by my grandmother as a "Barrel Kid"—a child left behind while a parent migrates to provide a better future—I was later "sent for" by my mother. Upon arriving in the U.S., I navigated the complexities of cultural transitions and the resilience required to bridge two worlds. From these beginnings, I have overcome the challenges of being an immigrant to become an Ivy League graduate, change agent, and author. My journey is marked by perseverance, cultural pride, and a dedication to uplifting others with similar experiences.
Why I Do What I Do
Education is Liberation
For me, public schools were a vital space where I discovered my potential and talents. I see education not merely as a path to academic success but as a potent tool for liberation. My mission is to impact the lives of children of color by challenging and dismantling oppressive systems within education, so they can experience schooling as a source of empowerment and a foundation for their futures. I am dedicated to creating educational experiences that affirm students' identities and equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate and transform their world.
What I Do
Instructional Leader & Designer
My career in education began in 2006 as a secondary English Language Arts teacher, motivated by a belief that education is a powerful tool for empowerment and freedom. Today, as an equity and instructional leader, I influence the lives of hundreds of young people by championing inclusive and transformative educational practices. With specialized training in instructional design, online learning, and change management, I drive systemic change through adult development and training. My focus is on creating culturally responsive and equitable learning environments, ensuring that all students, particularly those from marginalized communities, have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
How I Do What I Do
Life-Long Learner
I view learning as an ongoing journey essential for personal and professional growth. Reflective thinking is central to my approach, guiding my efforts to refine my skills and deepen my understanding of social justice in education. I am currently enrolled in two leadership programs and pursuing a doctoral degree, underscoring my commitment to continuous learning and leadership development. As a 21st-century scholar, author, teacher, and leader, I strive to align my beliefs with my actions, consistently working to serve others and effect meaningful change. My dedication to lifelong learning helps me stay responsive to the needs of the communities I serve and advocate effectively for equity and justice in all educational contexts.
